Hardest part done and I like it!

No, not this one. This is the shoulder, quite easy.

Here we go.

Antenna.

Oh my...

Yeah!

So, the helmet. Definitely the hardest part of the whole build due to the very threedimensional shape of it. The planning and headscratching took the whole weekend, but all in all just a couple of days of actual cutting/gluing and I got that done. The rest of this armour is composed of very flat shapes so I'm still confident that I can do this in time...and some sleepless nights.

I can also say that seeing myself in the mirror with THAT on my head made me giggle a bit :d

Here we really go!

What's this then? Says it on the label: Detonator Orgun!

Oh yeaaaaaaa....

Doesn't look like Orgun you say? How observant of you. This is a piece that goes under all that white, to get the bulkiness and also to act as a base to which I can secure all that...armour. I have mockups of the whole upper body lying around here, but they're not photogenic just yet so you just have to believe me here.

I'm confident and utterly pumped, been planning and testing this for a while now in between other stuff.

There's another, different project going on too. Multitask.

Pictures will follow this week. If I work hard it should be ready for Desucon Frostbite, but no promises there.

Do it again until it works.

Those blades, in the back of the axe. The aluminiumwiretapethingamajigs didn't work quite as well as I'd hoped, so I ripped them out and made these.

These will work. I know it.

Trying to mend my lack of knowledge

No pain, no gain. The axe has these little blades on the back, but because of my lack of experience with expanding foam (or anything really, this is my first prop that has come this far) I did not make a proper template for the foam to stick on...or where I'm going to cut! These might be redone, but we'll see now that the foam is drying again.

Update

There's something weird going on in the last picture and it's not related to that axe there...

Slightly failing only means more work.

Aka if life gives you lemons you throw them back. Even though my application of the foam was slightly flawed the other side at least had enough to try my hand at sculpting this. Hopefully in two days I'll get the base properly foamed. I also realized that I need to mix some methods here, mostly because I did not make a core for every part of the axe so sculpting for instance the round parts where the blade attaches could result in a disaster.

Excited, that I am.

Almost taking shape.

There's some steel in there, for rigidity and to add some heft to the blade. Those screws are there for the foam to grab a hold of.

Truth be told, I already foamed the blade...but I failed miserably in paying attention to Kamui Cosplays tutorials and not understanding that the foam is actually quite heavy before it hardens, even though I've used it before...so it tore itself off because I foamed both sides (if I had watched the tutorial first that would not have happened). I learned my lesson though.

To progress! To a productive year!

Yes, I have actually made some progress. The axe is now sturdy, but I left the handle area free of fiber and because of that it bends a bit when swung...don't know if that's a good idea though, just a hunch.

Practical things: the weather in Finland is crap. Either it's freezing, raining, snowing or all those at the same time and resin doesn't cure very well in that kind of an environment. So I made a box for it, out of foam sheets and a small heater inside. While it works marvelously it's seriously not-too-optimal, so as a proper start for a more productive new year I'll built a proper, bigger, better box this week (if my budget holds) and it can then also be used to handle the foaming that'll come next.

Heyo, update.

So what's new? The bendy part down there and the top spike, both secured to the handle. I'll see what I can do about the fiberglassing...it's quite cold and snowy outside and that stuff can't really be used inside my apartment unless I want to faint or something.

Stalker Exoskeleton armor

About three hours in the clock. Making an armor for a friend, to be used in a Stalker themed airsoft game.

That’s what it’s based on, with some modifications like the neck-protector added. Trying to make this quick and painless, just do it and stop worrying :)
